ROSWELL — New Mexico Military Institute won a game of stall ball, hitting a layup with two seconds left to beat the Rams 37-36 in a District 4-3A matchup.
NMMI outscored Portales four to two in the fourth quarter to hand the Rams their first district loss.
With the Rams up by one, and the clock running out, Colt junior DeMarcus Bousette hit the game-winner.
“They were up 35-34, and they held the ball for five minutes (in the fourth quarter),” Rams coach Mark Gallegos said.
Portales senior post Chance Sherburne hit two free throws to give the Rams a short-lived one-point lead before Bousette’s heroics.
“I take a lot of responsibility,” Gallegos said. “I should have had them in a different defense there at the end of the game. We were out a little bit too far, and there were able to get in and get the go-ahead layup.”
Senior post Todd McBroom led the Rams (12-7, 4-1) with a game-high 14 points, Sherburne added nine points and Cruz Ontiveros finished with six points.
Eduardo Martinez led NMMI (14-8, 3-2) with nine points and Andrew Cowan’s seven points.
The Rams held NMMI’s leading scorer Connor Williamson to five points.
The Colts scored the first seven points of the game on the way to an 11-10 first quarter lead before Portales rallied for a 24-22 halftime lead.
