SAN ANGELO, Texas — Freshman second baseman Rebecca Quinones delivered a one-out, two-run single to right in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Eastern New Mexico University softball team a seesaw 6-5 win Sunday over West Texas A&M in the Angelo State Classic.
The Zias came back to pound UT-Permian Basin 7-1 later Sunday and finished the season-opening, three-day event with a 4-2 record.
Quinones’ hit provided the fourth lead change against WT (1-5) and gave the Zias their second one-run win of the weekend over the Lady Buffs. ENMU beat WT 3-2 in Saturday’s matchup.
Michelle Anderson and Alex Mayo-Otis hit one-out singles in the seventh for ENMU, with both runners moved up when WT left fielder Katherine Alcala misplayed the latter hit, setting the stage for Quinones.
Mayo-Otis (1-0) allowed 12 hits, walked two and struck out four in getting a complete-game pitching victory. The Zias took a 4-3 lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but WT regained the advantage on Jenny Matulich’s two-out, two-run single in the top of the seventh.
The Zias had a much easier time against Permian Basin (1-4), a team they also handled 9-1 on Saturday. ENMU collected 14 hits, with Quinones belting a two-run double in the first and a sacrifice fly in the third.
Junior Nicole Dickson (3-2) cruised to the win on a four-hitter, blanking the Lady Falcons on two hits after the first. In one stretch, she retired 12 consecutive batters.
While the Zias played errorless ball in both games.
ENMU has a doubleheader on tap Wednesday at Oklahoma Panhandle State.
