A clear front runner in the battle for the District 4-3A regular season title will emerge tonight, as the Portales Rams host the Lovington Wildcats at the Portales High School Gymnasium (7 p.m.) Both teams sit at 5-1 in district action with one game left to play.
“The winner basically puts themselves in the driver’s seat,” Portales Ram head coach Mark Gallegos said. “We’ll both have one game after this, but (tonight) is huge.”
Portales’ only district loss came in a 37-36 loss against the NMMI Colts early this month, while Portales handed the Wildcats their only district defeat, 54-51, after Portales senior Skyler Partin connected on a layup as the game ended.
“I think we match up (with Lovington) pretty good,” Gallegos said. “They have two really good players, and they account for about 80 percent of their scoring.”
Portales, however, has a handful of players who can contribute big points on any given night.
“We’ve been getting scoring from a lot of different places,” Gallegos said. “Chance Sherburne is our leading scorer but Todd McBroom had a big game the other night. We’ve been able to spread it around, and I think the games that we’ve been successful in—we’ve had pretty balanced scoring.”
While the Rams host Lovington tonight, the Lady Rams will try to stay undefeated in district play Saturday night as they host the Lady Wildcats at the Portales High School gymnasium.
The Rams will make up a game at Clovis that was snowed out earlier this season Saturday night, before ending their District 4-3A regular season schedule at Dexter Friday, Feb. 16.
