Law officers said a Portales man arrested Wednesday for kidnapping threatened his victim with a gun, sexually assaulted her and beat her before she escaped.
George Vela, 27, of Portales was charged with kidnapping, criminal sexual penetration and felon in possession of a firearm. He is being held at the Roosevelt County Detention Center on $500,000 bond.

According to a press release from the Portales Police Department, Vela placed the muzzle of a handgun in his victim’s mouth before physically assaulting her on Tuesday.

After she complained of being sore he ordered her to take a hot bath. Later he forced her to leave the house with just a towel. When she attempted to flee to a neighbor’s he chased her down and ordered her back inside, the report said.
That night he forced her to stay with him and perform sex acts, the police report showed.

On Wednesday, police said Vela threatened her and left her in the house to go to the store; about 1 p.m. she called police on a cell phone while he was gone.
Vela was located about 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday and fled when police tried to apprehend him. A news release from Roosevelt County’s Sheriff’s Office reported Vela’s vehicle reached speeds of 85 mph as he tried to elude officers. He was captured when he tried to run into the emergency room at Roosevelt General Hospital.

District Attorney Matt Chandler said Vela will appear before a grand jury within the next 10 days.
