Zias drop LSC doubleheader

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Things started out pretty well for Eastern New Mexico University on Saturday, but they went downhill pretty quickly.

The Zias scored three times in the top of the first in the opener of a Lone Star Conference South Division softball doubleheader with Angelo State, but the Rambelles took control two big innings later in the game and went on to 10-3 and 9-2 wins to complete a four-game series sweep.

Pitcher Kari Galm capped a four-run fourth with a three-run homer off freshman Kristen Cruickshank (2-6), giving the Rambelles a 5-3 lead, and they put the contest ouot of reach with five more runs in the fifth — aided by three ENMU errors.

Run-scoring singles by Rebecca Qunones and Cruickshank and an RBI groundout by Alex Mayo Otis put the Zias ahead in the first, but they managed only three more hits the rest of the way against Galm (11-3), who walked two and struck out three.

In the second game, the Rambelles (23-5, 4-0) chased ENMU starter Nicole Dickson (8-3) in building a 5-1 lead in the second inning. Brittney Cargill (9-2) scattered eight Zias hits in going the distance and benefitted from a 10-hit Angelo attack.

Cargill was one of three Rambelles to collect two hits in the contest. Angelo took advantage of four ENMU errors, leading to three unearned runs.

Goodman went 2-for-4 in the opener and 3-for-4 in the second game for the Zias.
