Portales prepares for movie premiere

Excitement is building for Elida residents Ronald and Glenda Anthony as they prepare to watch the debut of “Believe in Me” tonight at the Tower Twin Theater.

Ronald Anthony co-owns a 1947 Chevy and a 1956 Chevy used in the movie about an Oklahoma girls basketball team shot in the Clovis-Portales area in October 2004.

“It sure was a pleasant experience and we’ve been dying for the movie to come out,” Ronald Anthony said.

He said he, his son and his brother were happy to let their antique be used in the movie.

During filming in Elida, the Anthonys drove the cars by the house during one scene and also traveled with the cars to locations in Floyd, Portales and Clovis. During the Clovis scene, Glenda Anthony drove one of the cars for the scene.

“It was a fun experience,” Glenda Anthony said.

The film, which follows the true story of a 1960s Oklahoma girls basketball team, was shot on location in Portales, Floyd, and Elida and featured local residents who were extras in the film. Scenes were also shot in Clovis.

While in Elida, the film crew spent time showing the children and residents what they were doing and what was going on with the production, according to the Anthonys. The production company would set up a mobile kitchen and feed whomever was on set, Ronald Anthony said.

“We really enjoyed it. It was a lot of fun,” he said.

According to Tower Twin General Manager Michelle Goodwin, the first showing of the movie is sold out. Forty-nine tickets are available for the 9:25 p.m. showing, she said.

Local residents have donated items for a reception that will be held at 6 p.m. at the Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce.

Upon entering the theater, guests will be treated to a red-carpet experience, complete with spotlights.

The street in front of the theater will also be blocked off, enabling guests to experience a taste of Hollywood, Goodwin said.
