Tennis rackets fare well in Amarillo

PNT Staff Report

Portales senior Ella Erf and the Partin brothers came away with first place finishes at an Amarillo tennis tournament Thursday and Friday.

“We played well,” Ram coach Wade Fraze said. “I was especially encouraged by our doubles teams.”

Erf led the Lady Ram charge, winning all of her singles matches, before beating Carlsbad’s Jamie McKenna in a tight championship match 7-5, 2-6, 7-5.

“Ella hadn’t lost a match since she was a freshman or an eighth grader,” Ram coach Wade Fraze said. “And this championship match pushed her.”

Portales junior Bethany Self claimed the tournament singles consolation championship.

On the boys side, despite being paired together for just two weeks, Skyler and Walker Partin combined to win all four of their matches in two sets on the way to grabbing the doubles championship.

The Partins finished their run for first place, beating Carlsbad’s top doubles team 6-4, 6-3.

Portales’ No. 2 doubles duo of Ethan Riser and Colton Stanton won three matches and lost one to take fifth place, while the Rams top singles player, Kyle Adams also won three matches and lost one for a fifth place finish.

Portales hosts Goddard Tuesday, before traveling to Clovis on April 19.
