ABILENE, Texas — Senior right-hander Brian Kennedy tossed a four-hitter in the opener and second baseman Thomas Bumpass keyed a five-run fourth with a two-run single in the nightcap as Abilene Christian completed a four-game Lone Star Conference South Division baseball sweep of Eastern New Mexico University by beating the Greyhounds 6-1 and 9-3 on Saturday.
Kennedy (8-2) gave up an unearned run in the first when Tim Crafton led off with a single, took second on an infield out, stole third and scored on a throwing error. But ENMU (19-30, 4-10 South) managed only one more hit until the ninth, when Kennedy got the final two outs after giving up a pair of singles.
Six players drove in one run each for the division-leading Wildcats (38-11, 13-3). Abilene Christian, ranked 13th in NCAA Division II, collected 12 hits off Evan Courteau (4-8) and Troy Vaughan.
The Hounds were their own worst enemies in the second game, committing five errors which led to eight unearned runs for the Wildcats.
Leading 3-0, Abilene Christian put the game away with its five-run outburst in the fourth on only three hits and three ENMU errors.
Abilene Christian’s Matt Davis (4-2) pitched 5 1/3 innings for the victory. ENMU got on the board in the fifth when Jonathon Marbury reached on a fielder’s choice, took second on a passed ball and scored on Clayton Young’s single to left.
In the sixth, pinch-hitter Daniel Martinez walked and scored on a double by Troy Vaughan. Vaughan eventually came home on a fielder’s choice grounder by Casey Bigham.
ENMU freshman left-hander Justin Sergeant (2-3) went 2 2/3 innings, giving up five hits and three runs — all unearned.
ENMU will finish its season with a noon (MDT) contest on Monday at Wayland Baptist and a four-game division series next weekend at Greyhound Field against Texas A&M Kingsville, with doubleheaders on tap Friday and Saturday.
