The Lady Rams faced a total of just 26 batters in seven innings as Portales pounded Ruidoso in District 4-3A doubleheader action Saturday afternoon in the mountains 19-0 and 21-0.
Senior pitcher Shareesa Nusser threw a no-hitter in the second game, facing just 10 Lady Warrior hitters— in fact, Nusser’s no-hitter was one defensive error from being a perfect game, but Nusser gives a lot of credit to her defense.
“I really had my defense behind me today,” Nusser said. “Five batters hit the ball, three grounders and two of them were pop flies to the outfield. So that helped quite a bit having them behind me.”
“It’s always a great accomplishment to throw a no-hitter,” Lady Ram head coach Robbie Crowley said.
The 21 runs the Lady Rams posted in the first three innings also helped.
“We hit the ball very well,” Crowley said. “When we put runs on the board it takes a lot of the pressure of Shareesa and Sasha (Parker).”
Parker also pitched a gem, allowing no runs on three hits in four innings pitched in the Lady Rams 19-0 first-game victory.
“They’re just getting stronger every game,” Crowley said. “And it definitely showed today.”
The Lady Rams (12-6, 8-0) can clinch a district title tie with one win against Dexter at home on Tuesday, and they can clinch the District 4-3A championship outright with a sweep of the Lady Demons.
“If we continue to play like we’re playing and keep rolling, we have a chance to do some really good things at state,” Crowley said.
