Portales golfers place seventh at Hobbs

HOBBS — The Portales Ram golf team shot a combined 329, finishing in a tie for seventh in a nine-team field Tuesday at Ocotillo Golf Course.

Sophomore Donavin Sanchez shot the best round for Portales with a 4-over-par 76.

Senior Jefferson Powers shot an 82, sophomore William Archibeque an 85, sophomore Rick Bergman an 86 and senior Garrett Hatch a 97.

Roswell High won the team event with a combined score of 305 spurred by Turner Carlile who shot a tournament best one-under par 71.

On the girls side, senior Tori Teague qualified for the state tournament with a round of 91, followed by Lindsey Woodward’s 97. Sophomore Amber McCasland fired a 111.

Portales travels Thursday the Class 1-3A state tournament in Socorro.

“We know that golf course,” Ram coach Pat Crowley said. “It’ll be interesting to see how we handle that (in Socorro).”
