LOVINGTON — Even with the district championship in hand, the Portales Lady Rams refused to give up when they fell behind late in their district finale.
After winning the first game of the District 4-3A doubleheader 10-1 behind solid pitching from senior Sasha Parker, Portales rallied from a late 3-0 deficit to beat the Lady Wildcats 7-4 to finish its district schedule undefeated.
“When they were down 3-0, they could have just said, ‘We have the district wrapped up, it doesn’t matter. But they handled it very well. They still had fire and they didn’t want to lose that game,” Lady Ram coach Robbie Crowley said. “And that’s exciting as a coach to see that desire to win in your kids.”
In the first game, Parker frustrated the Lovington hitters, allowing one earned run on two hits while striking out eight Lady Wildcats.
Junior Janette Spotswood was 3-for-3 with four RBI.
Leading 2-1 after the first inning, the lady Rams scored eight runs in the final four innings to bring the game to a fast end. Senior Kaycee Quick also contributed from the plate, going 1-for-4 with one RBI. Amanda Terry went 1-for-4 as well with two RBI.
Senior pitcher Shareesa Nusser struck out seven nd allowed four runs on five hits in the second game. Nusser helped her cause connecting on a double in the Lady Rams’ come-from-behind five-run seventh inning.
Portales (17-7, 12-0 district) travels to Artesia on Monday, before learning its seeding in the Class 3A state softball tournament May 6.
