A variety of New Mexico wines from Tularosa Vineyards will be available for sampling during the Portales MainStreet Summer Wine Fest Friday evening.

Sponsored by First Community Bank and hosted by the Portales MainStreet Organization, the come-and-go event will be held 7-11 p.m. at the Do Drop In courtyard, said MainStreet board president Danny Woodward.

“It’s actually an event to go to, but also a fund-raiser for us,” Woodward said.

Funds raised from the event will be used to help the MainStreet organization with office expenses and promotions, Woodward said.
John Kirby, who works at KENW-TV in Portales, attended last summer’s Wine Fest with his wife and came away impressed with the quality of the New Mexico wines.

“It was one of the best events we’ve been to since we’ve been in Portales,” said Kirby, who arrived in Portales from New York City in 2003.

For $25, attendees will receive a wine glass, one glass of wine and be able to sample the selection of wines provided by Tularosa Vineyards, Woodward said.

“They’re very educated,” Woodward said of Tularosa Vineyards personnel. “They can tell you what wines go with what.”

Event organizers will also provide finger food and entertainment. The evening’s entertainment will be by former Portales resident Mo Perry of Amarillo, Woodward said.

This summer’s event is being held in conjunction with Eastern New Mexico University graduation in an effort to draw visitors and families of ENMU graduates. Event organizers hope to be able to thank families for allowing Portales the opportunity to be a home for their children while attending ENMU, Woodward said.

“This is an event where we could actually shake their hands for letting them share their kids with us,” Woodward said.
