Debra Hill Santos, a Portales High School alumnus and 1987 Eastern New Mexico graduate, was awarded the “Best Creative Thesis” during spring commencement at Radford University in Radford, Va. The award is bestowed in honor of academic excellence in graduate studies and thesis preparation by the university’s graduate college.
Using a variety of gemstones and metals, Santos designs and fabricates “museum quality jewelry”. Santos earned a masters in fine arts degree from Radford University in December of 2006.
She is the daughter of Janel and the late Jim Hill of Portales. She and her husband reside in Guntersville, Ala., where she is employed by the U.S. Army.

Portales resident Linsey Burkett has been named to the Dean’s List at Johnson & Wales University for the 2007 winter term.
To be nominated for the list, student’s must earn a cumulative grade point average of 3.40 or above. Burkett is majoring in management in the college of business at the Denver campus.

Valencia Elementary teacher Carol Wood, has been selected as the Wal-Mart Local Teacher of the Year.
Sponsored by Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club, a $1,000 educational grant will be presented to the school, along with a $100 gift card to buy classroom supplies. Wood will also receive an honorary teacher of the year polo shirt and a personalized certificate.

A First Caller
A First Caller placed third in the $320,638 New Mexican Spring Futurity RG1 at Sunland Park Racetrack, in Sunland Park, New Mexico.
The two-year old stallion is owned by Richard R. Shearer of Portales, and trained by Blane Wood. The colt covered the 300-yard race in a time of 15:193 and was ridden by Ricky Ramirez.
