The Portales Lady Ram soccer team thought they had the Goddard junior varsity figured out last weekend in a 5-1 loss in Roswell Tuesday afternoon at the Portales soccer complex they proved it with a 5-1 victory over the Lady Rockets for their first win of the season.
“We knew that we could play with this team,” Lady Ram soccer coach Traci Sievers said. “There were some adjustments we wanted to make. We made those adjustments and they played really well.”
Kaysha Christenson anchored the Portales defense and senior goalkeeper Lizzie Armstrong shut out the Goddard offense in the first half.
“The thing we did better today was the defense marking their players,” Sievers said.
Goals by Kaitlin Johnson and Lindsay Keller, along with shutout play by senior goalkeeper Lizzie Armstrong gave the Lady Rams a 2-0 halftime lead.
“The defense was just strong,” Sievers said. “The midfielders and forwards were able to run down the field pretty good.”
Jamie Bargas scored twice in the second half and senior forward Kandace Bergseiker added another goal to push the Portales girls (1-4) to a 5-1 win.
“I don’t know if I was surprised (that we won),” Sievers said. “I was just glad to see that they all played up to their potential. Not all of them have played to their potential on the same day, and today they did.”
“I think they realize it’s a lot more fun to win,” Sievers said. “I think they knew they had it in them. It was just a matter of starting to hit on different cylinders and get everybody going at positions that they know they can play now.”
The Portales boys, however, lost to the Goddard junior varsity Tuesday night 4-1.
One of Goddard’s goals was scored on a Portales own goal.
“We just made some mistakes,” assistant coach Scott Parker said. “They were still pretty aggressive but we’re just a half-step slow on thinking and reacting.
The Rams (0-2) lone goal came from Jonathan Pruitt on a penalty kick.
The Rams and Lady Rams travel to Artesia on Thursday.
