PowerSchool access available
Parents may check their children’s grades from any computer connected to the Internet by typing and clicking on PowerSchool for parents. They will need a new user name and password since the system was recently updated. Parents may get those by coming to the junior high or technology department offices.

National Anthem Day celebrated
Friday junior high students gathered in the courtyard while the high school choir performed the National Anthem as part of a national celebration. Choir director Franklin Smith led students in a rendition of our national song.

Assessments completed
Students have finished the MAPS testing in language arts and math, and they have completed their science and history short cycle assessments. Information from these sources lets teachers see where their students are on the road to mastery of information they need to successfully complete their junior high studies.

Football hosts Texico Tuesday, Thursday
Both football teams will be hosting their Texico rivals this week. The seventh grade teams face off Tuesday followed by the eighth grade teams on Thursday.

Volleyball teams playing at home
After a game for each team and a tournament last week, the volleyball teams host two sets of games this week. First serve is at 3 p.m. on Thursday when all four of Yucca’s teams come to Portales. Saturday Ruidoso brings all four of their teams for games beginning at 11 a.m.

PHS Counselors
ACT, SAT exam dates set
Seniors interested in attending a four-year college or university after graduation are required to take a college entrance exam, either the ACT or the SAT. The next ACT will be given on Oct. 27. The next SAT will be given on Oct. 6. Seniors should start the application process to the colleges of their choice this month. They should also begin obtaining scholarship information.

Scholarships posted on Web
Available scholarships are posted on the Portales Schools Web site in the schools section under Portales High School, Counselors Corner. Other information is also posted in the Counselors Corner. Talk to the counselors for more information about college entrance exams, college admissions, and scholarships.

Competency tests scheduled
The New Mexico High School Competency Exam (NMHSCE) will be administered Oct. 2-4 to all current Portales High School seniors that have not passed some or all portions of NMHSCE. Former PHS students from graduating classes 2002-2007, who received a certificate of completion, will also be given the opportunity to re-take the exam at this time.
All New Mexico high school seniors must pass the NMHSCE to receive their diplomas. Senior students that transferred in from out-of-state will be required to take the NMHSCE in order to receive their diplomas. Students and parents who have any questions may visit the guidance office or call at 356-7015. If you are a former PHS student call by Sept. 25 to arrange to re-test.

Elida School News
Open house set
Elementary and secondary open house will be held at 6 p.m. Monday. Parents will meet in the multipurpose room for introductions and general information.
Teachers will visit with parents in their classrooms, beginning at 6:30 p.m. There will be demonstrations on accessing the new E-Chalk school Web page and the PowerSchool site.

Varsity volleyball captures wins
The varsity girls defeated House on Tuesday. The varsity and junior varsity both had wins against Tucumcari on Thursday. The games on Saturday resulted in the varsity girls defeating Clovis Christian. Junior high teams narrowly lost to CC.

School pictures will be taken Monday
Seventh-graders will travel to Eastern New Mexico University for Cultural Diversity Day on Monday.
From 5:30-8 p.m. Tuesday will be the New Mexico School Board Association Region Meeting in Dora.
Seniors will go to ENMU for College Day on Wednesday.
Friday there will be parent/teacher conferences from 11am-7pm. There will be no school for students.
Homecoming is Oct. 5, Floyd vs. Dora.
