Aucutt’s Paint Store opens in Portales

In business since 1939, Aucutt’s Paint Store recently opened a second location in Portales.

The grand opening of the store at 604 East Second was Tuesday afternoon.

The family decided that the Portales area needed a specialty paint store and purchased the property that formerly housed My Little Red Caboose Childcare Center, Bob Aucutt said.

“We’re excited to come to this community and the response has been tremendous,” said Aucutt, who has worked for the family business.

Five generations of the Aucutt family have owned the business since it was founded by G.C. Williams, Bob Aucutt’s great-grandfather.

Six years ago, the business was purchased by Aucutt’s daughter, Tisha Brothers.

Aucutt’s Paint Store carries house paints, industrial coating, automotive finishes and window coverings. They also have the capability to load aerosol cans with custom matched paint colors, Aucutt said.

“That’s (aerosol cans) something not many places can do,” Aucutt said.

According to Aucutt, the business is one of a few that specialize in three paint types. The business is also able to custom match paint colors and stain colors. The staff attends training classes and trade shows, Aucutt said.

“It’s quite a challenge for us to be experts in automotive paints, house paints and industrial paints,” Aucutt said.

Another service is free on-site consultation. Aucutt, who works as the outside sales person, visits homes and job sites to offer advice on what paint products and materials would best be suited for the customer’s project.

“We pride ourselves on customer service and product knowledge,” Aucutt said.

“We teach our staff to get as much information from the customers and put themselves in their shoes,” he said.

The Portales location is managed by Dave Frost and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
