Greyhounds get overtime winner

Freedom New Mexico

Eastern New Mexico University had its first win over Texas A&M-International in sight on Sunday when the Dustdevils forced overtime with a goal on a free kick in the final three minutes.

It didn’t take the Greyhounds long to break through, though. Texas A&M-International goalkeeper Noe Pantoja was called for a foul for tripping ENMU’s Ryan McClanahan just 22 seconds into the sudden-death overtime, and the sophomore midfielder knocked in his second goal of the game and 11th of the season to give the Hounds a 3-2 win at the ENMU pitch.

The Dustdevils had won the previous two meetings — 3-0 in Portales last year, and 3-2 earlier this season at Laredo, Texas.

McClanahan gave the Hounds (5-6) a 2-1 lead in the 62nd minute when he took a short pass from senior defender Donnell Jackson and beat Pantoja. International’s Raul Quinones then converted a game-tying free kick with 2:40 left in regulation.

Senior midfielder Keith Vargas put ENMU in front in the 10th minute when he scored off a free kick. The Hounds then lost midfidler Derek Bravo to a red card with about 10 minutes to go in the half, playing shorthanded the rest of the way, and the Dustdevils (2-4-2) tied it with just under six minutes left before the intermission on a goal by Andeas Eliasson.

ENMU, which beat St. Mary’s at home on Friday to snap a five-match losing streak, returns to action this Friday with a 4 p.m. non-league outing against Newman.
