Mayor: City Commission supports Thomas

Clovis city commissioners took no action Thursday following an executive session called to discuss the status of City Manager Joe Thomas.

Mayor David Lansford did issue a written statement, which he said expressed the Commission’s full support for Thomas.

“We are confident with (Thomas’) leadership and consider the circumstances of the recent past resolved,” the statement read.

Commissioners would not comment on whether any disciplinary action had been taken against Thomas.

Thomas also declined to answer questions following the executive session.

Thomas pleaded guilty last week to an open container violation. He was arrested Aug. 3 after failing a field sobriety test at a state police sobriety checkpoint between Logan and San Jon in Quay County.

Police detected alcohol on his person and found an open beer container in his vehicle. A blood test showed Thomas’ blood-alcohol level at .04, half the legal limit in New Mexico.

Toxicology results also show he was not under the influence of illicit drugs at the time of his arrest.
