ENMU picked 6th, 7th in LSC basketball polls

RICHARDSON, Texas — Tarleton State’s men and West Texas A&M’s women are projected to win Lone Star Conference South Division basketball titles in polls released last week by the conference office.

Eastern New Mexico University was tabbed sixth in the seven-team men’s South race and seventh in the eight-team women’s poll.
Tarleton State, third in the South last season, received 12 of 20 men’s first-place votes and tallied 131 points to finish in front of 2006-07 co-champions West Texas A&M and Midwestern State. Reigning South freshman of the year Dan Eichel returns for the Texans and will be joined by three Division I transfers.

West Texas A&M’s women, coming off a 14-0 run through the South a year ago, receiving 21 of 23 first-place votes and 180 points to 145 for Abilene Christian. Junior guard Emily Brister returns for the Lady Buffs after winning back-to-back South player of the year honors.

Tarleton State was third, followed by Angelo State, Midwestern State, Texas Woman’s, ENMU and Texas A&M-Kingsville. Abilene Christian and Angelo State each received one first-place vote.

Central Oklahoma’s men were tabbed the favorites in the North, earning 16 of 20 first-place votes and 136 points. Texas A&M-Commerce, coming off the most successful season in school history with a 28-9 record and NCAA Division II Elite Eight appearance, was the women’s favorite in the North with 18 of 20 first-place votes and 136 points.

The season begins on Nov. 15.
