CANYON, Texas — West Texas A&M broke a tie with four goals in a span of just over 19 minutes in the second half and handed Eastern New Mexico University a 5-3 loss on Friday in a Southwest Soccer Conference match.
WT (11-1, 4-1 SSC), ranked No. 22 in NCAA Division II, took the lead for good when senior Kenneth Christensen scored on a penalty kick at the 51:40 mark, making it 2-1. The Buffs then added three more goals before senior midfielders Andrew Perez and Ryan Atkinson countered for the Greyhounds (6-8, 1-4).
Ben Everson scored two goals and Aaron Thornton had a goal and an assist for WT.
The Buffs struck first when Everson scored into an open net after Thornton passed the ball from the baseline to junior Itamar Keinan, who pulled goalkeeper Leif Craddock away from the net and sent the ball to Everson.
The Hounds tied it in the 30th minute when freshman forward Edgar Bear knocked in a ball misplayed by WT keeper Shane Taylor.
The Buffs posted a 23-8 advantage in shots in the match, including 10-2 in shots on goal. They also had a 10-2 margin in corner kicks.
The Hounds return to action when they host Northeastern State in a 3 p.m. SSC clash next Friday.
