Background: Cain grew up around Portales and graduated from Dora High School. By the time he graduated, he already had his
Emergency Medical Services certification and went to work at PFD at age 19.

Job description: Firefighting, ambulance calls, fire prevention, truck maintenance and station maintenance. He works 24 hours on and 48 hours off so he has the time to really get to know his coworkers.

Training: EMT basic, EMT intermediate, EMT/paramedic (two years), firefighter I, firefighter II and driver operator training.

Q. What is a typical day on the job like?
A. “There’s really not a typical day. You never know what you’re going to run into. No two fires or calls are the same.”

Q. Why did you choose this job?
A. “I always wanted to fight fires — be a fireman. I really didn’t want to go to college, but ever since I went to work here, I’ve been in a class.

Q. What do you enjoy most about your job?
A. “It’s not the same thing every day. You get to help people and solve their problems.”
