Hounds and Zias swept at UCO

Freedom New Mexico

EDMOND, Okla. — After battling back from an early 22-point deficit, the last eight seconds were a little too long Saturday for the Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball team.

The Greyhounds trailed the entire way until the final 3 1/2 minutes, then held a two-point lead in the closing seconds. But Central Oklahoma scored the tying basket on Brian Walker’s rebound of a teammate’s air-balled 3-pointer with eight seconds left, then reserve Lance Harper forced a turnover and hit the second of two free throws with four seconds to go to allow the Bronchos to escape with an 80-79 Lone Star Conference men’s crossover victory.

For the Hounds (2-7), it was their sixth loss in a row and the second tough one on the weekend trip to Oklahoma. They lost in overtime at Northeastern State on Thursday night.

Senior guard Sam Belt led five Bronchos in double figures with 18 points. Senior guard Justin Redman-Trotter compiled 21 points, 10 rebounds and four assists for the Hounds, while guards Marquis Ruffin and Kevin Davis added 17 and 12 points, respectively.

Belt hit a 3-pointer with 4:20 left in the half to stake the Bronchos (8-2) to a 44-22 lead. ENMU then finished the half on a 13-2 run, holding the Bronchos without a field goal to pull to 46-35 at the break.

The lead stayed in double figures until Redman-Trotter hit a 3-pointer with 10:18 left, making it 62-55. ENMU continued to chip away, finally tying it 73-73 on Jamaal McCoy’s free throw with 3:24 to go.

McCoy’s layup put the Hounds in front again 78-77 with 35 seconds left. Central’s Eric Cazenave then missed two free throws, and Redman-Trotter converted the second of two shots with 19 seconds to go for a two-point ENMU lead.

Both teams shot just over 50 percent for the game. The Hounds stayed in it by netting 18-of-22 free throws and dominating the boards 39-24, but they committed 19 turnovers and went just 3-of-13 from 3-point range.

Zias lose 96-80

The Eastern New Mexico University women’s basketball team was hot on Saturday. The Zias just couldn’t keep Central Oklahoma out of the paint.

ENMU erased a 14-point deficit to take a nine-point lead late in the first half, but the Bronchos responded with a 28-10 run after the intermission and pulled away to a 96-80 Lone Star Conference women’s crossover victory.

ENMU shot 49 percent for the game and set a school record for made 3-pointers by going 14-of-26. The Zias also converted 22-of-27 free throws.
Junior forward Lizzie Brenner scored 22 points and collected eight rebounds for the Bronchos (6-2), while senior guard Cassidy Pillow went 8-for-9 from the floor for 20 points and junior guard Mallory Marcus scored 19.

Freshman Cat Clay went 4-for-7 from 3-point distance and finished with 19 points for the Zias (1-7), while reserves Patricia Malouff and Lacey Acker added 16 and 12, respectively. Acker was 4-for-6 from beyond the arc.

The Bronchos broke away from a 9-9 tie with 14 consecutive points, a streak ended by two free throws from Malouff with 11:17 left in the half.

That started the Zias on a 37-14 run which pushed them in front 46-37 after a 3-pointer by freshman guard Blythe McPherson with 1:28 left in the half. ENMU led 48-42 at the break, its most points in a half in more than two years.

Central Oklahoma pulled even 54-54 on a jumper by reserve Karlie Free with 14:59 to go. Brenner then stole the ball and Pillow hit a jump shot with 14:31 remaining to give the Bronchos the lead for good.

Central extended a four-point lead to 80-64 with a 17-5 run over a five-minute span midway through the half.

The Bronchos shot 53 percent from the field (37-of-70) and forced the Zias into 31 turnovers while committing only 15 of their own.
