PNT Staff Report
An account has been set up to benefit the family of Jezika Shumate, of Portales, who was seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident on Thursday, according to bank representatives.
The account has been set up at First Financial Credit Union in Portales under the name Brett Shumate Family, Jezika Shumate’s father. According to Forest Griffin, a spokesperson for the family, the funds will go to help pay for medical costs.
According to Griffin, Jezika Shumate remained in critical condition Monday at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock. He said sensation had returned to some degree to one side of her body that hadn’t been responding and doctors were beginning to take her out of a medically-induced coma.
Griffin said, despite the progress, doctors have said the 18-year-old will have a long recovery.
According to New Mexico State Police, Shumate was driving a 1996 Chevrolet Corsica shortly before 7 p.m. Thursday when it was struck by a Ford Ranger driven by Thomas Sullivan of Portales in the intersection of N.M. 206 and North Avenue O, northwest of Portales.
Shumate’s husband, Travis Freeman, 19, of Portales, died in the accident. Sullivan was uninjured.
