Hounds absorb loss in Abilene

Freedom New Mexico

ABILENE, Texas — First baseman Allen Smith hit a two-out, three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning, giving Abilene Christian the lead en route to a 14-8 win over Eastern New Mexico University on Friday night in the opener of a four-game Lone Star Conference baseball series.

Smith and right fielder Thomas Bumpass drove in four runs apiece for the Wildcats (22-11, 18-6 LSC), who took advantage of five ENMU errors to score five unearned runs — including the three on Smith’s homer, which erased a 3-2 Greyhounds advantage.

ENMU (16-15, 9-12) jumped on Abilene Christian starter Preston Vancil (4-2) for three runs on five hits in the first, but Vancil recovered to shut the Hounds out over the next five innings.

Third baseman Derrick Kennedy went 4-for-5 for ENMU, driving in three runs. Clayton Young, Paden Vendrely, Tyler Hayes and Jonathon Marbury each added two hits.

Designated hitter Trey Watten went 4-for-5 with three doubles and three runs scored for the Wildcats.

The teams play a 1 p.m. doubleheader today, then finish the series with a 1 p.m. single contest on Sunday.
