ENMU holds off Abilene Christian

Freedom New Mexico

ABILENE, Texas — Sophomore shortstop Casandra McCommons blasted a three-run homer and Eastern New Mexico University took advantage of five Abilene Christian errors for eight unearned runs Friday in an 8-5 Lone Star Conference South Division victory over the Wildcats.

With two out in the top of the third, Rebecca Quinones reached on an error and Anna Hershkowitz singled, setting the stage for McCammons’ third homer of the season and a 5-0 lead.

Hershkowitz went 3-for-4, including a two-run single in the first, as the Zias (23-26, 3-10 South) won for the third time in four games and kept their slim LSC postseason tournament hopes alive.

Soplhomore Kristen Cruickshank (11-10) went 4 1/3 innings for the win. Junior Natalie Woodside worked the final 2 2/3 innings for her first save, escaping a first-and-second, none-out jam in the seventh and getting Shelby McElvain on a pop-up to short to end it with the bases loaded.

Kim McDonald (13-12) took the loss for Abilene Christian (23-21, 8-5), allowing seven hits with five walks and two strikeouts.

The teams will complete their series with a noon (MDT) doubleheader today.
