Wesley Martin, 17, was honored at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor by Boy Scout Troop 18 on May 18 at First United Methodist Church of Portales.
Martin joined Cub Scout Pack 11 at age 6 and earned its highest award, the Arrow of Light. He has been active in Boy Scout troops in Japan, Ohio and New Mexico.
Highlights of his scouting career include hiking in the mountains of Japan and New Mexico; two whitewater rafting trips and three caving experiences with his Ohio troop; and a summer adventure in Washington, D.C., with bicycling along the canals around Civil War battlefields.
In 2003 he participated in the Centennial of Flight Camporee at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. He has attended summer camps near Tokyo, Japan, in Indiana and in Ohio. He backpacked at Philmont Scout Ranch in 2005 and participated in Sea Base in the Florida Keys in 2007. He worked on the ecology staff at Camp Wehinahpay in 2007 and will work there again this summer. He also has earned the 50-Miler badge.
An Eagle Scout must have completed at least 21 merit badges and organized a service project that benefits his church, community or school.
