After more than a year since its conception, the Portales High School boys soccer team finally has their leader, Jonathan Smith.
This is Smith’s first time coaching high school soccer, but like the Portales girls coach, Traci Sievers, Smith has spent several years coaching soccer at the youth league level in Portales.
Smith was born and raised in Portales, and currently teaches math and reading at Lindsey Middle School.
Smith saw the rise and fall of Portales’ first attempt at establishing a soccer program first hand, as he attended PHS in the mid-90s.
“They started the high school soccer team,” Smith said. “I don’t remember if it lasted two or three years, but it kind of fizzled out for whatever reason, maybe lack of support,” Smith said.
While he hasn’t had a lot of time to get to know his team, he does have an idea of what he’s working with.
“We’ve scrimmaged a little bit out here with them,” Smith said. “They are very talented and they’re a pretty close group. They want to stick together and that’s a good thing.”
