The Eastern New Mexico University Board of Regents approved the use
of $395,000 toward the design and construction of a weight training
facility at the Portales campus.
ENMU fields 14 men’s and women’s Division II teams.
“It make sense to construct the new facility to increase the
recruitment of athletic students at ENMU,” said Scott Smart, ENMU’s
vice President of business affairs.
Smart presented the proposal for the weight training facility to the board of regents at Friday’s meeting.
“We need to move forward with this project to give the athletic
department a positive feeling,” Regent President Alva Carter said.
“This new facility is important to the future success of the ENMU athletic program,” Board member Chad Lydick said.
The cost of the facility will be $800,000, $600,000 for construction and $200,000 for equipment, Smart said.
The college has $350,000 available for this project through
legislative funding and $45,000 from student activity fees, Smart said.
The additional $300,000 for construction will be sought from
legislative funding while the $200,000 for the equipment will be raised
“We need for the ENMU athletic students and alumni to step up,”
Carter said. “They need to take an active role in the fundraising for
With the approval of the regents today the staff can move forward
with the design of the facility, ENMU President Steven Gamble said.
“Now that we have the approval of the regents, we can start work on
design and get to bidding as soon as possible,” Smart said. “We are
looking to complete construction by spring of 2009.”
