County fair days ahead

The show calves are conditioned just right and the grounds have been prepared for another year — it’s Roosevelt County Fair time.

“The fair’s coming together real well,” Roosevelt County Extension Agent Patrick Kircher said. “It’ll be a good week of fun and festivites.”

Booths begin going up in the Home Arts Building today and Monday is devoted to getting entries checked in at the fair.

The fair officially opens Tuesday with the New Mexico Christian Children’s Home pork chop breakfast from 6:30-8:30 a.m. Most venues close on Saturday night but the carnival is still open Sunday.

Kircher says there has been plenty of interest in home arts entries. He says livestock entry numbers are going to be close to the same as last year.

“We have some good entertainment every night of the fair,” Fair Board President Tim Allison said.

Dave Nash and Floyd Jamboree open things at 7 p.m. on Tuesday with Blackwater closing the slab down. On Wednesday square dancing starts things off at 7 p.m. followed by Jody Nix and the Texas Cowboys, featuring Coby Carter on fiddle.

Thursday night will be rocking with the Fireballs and Home Cookin’. Friday night Wild Bill Cathey leads off with rope tricks followed by Gospel music. Sharon Dictson is onstage Saturday and the Fun Brothers close both Friday and Saturday nights.

Sun Valley Rides is back with the carnival which runs Tuesday through Sunday evenings and the ArenaCross motocross show will fly through the air at the Special Events Arena on Saturday night.

According to Kircher new to this year’s fair is a change in the time the pig chase is run. It will be grouped in with other Kid’s Day events on Saturday beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Kircher says a Special Needs Student Day has been added on Thursday. Special Needs Students will get their own guided tour of the Roosevelt County Fair at 5:30 p.m.

Returning after several years absence is the Shepherd’s Lead competition on Friday night. Entrants model fashion as they lead their show lambs.

Kircher says this year is the 20th anniversary of the Roosevelt County Junior Livestock Sale. Held on Saturday morning, the sale provides an incentive for youth exhibiting livestock at the fair.

“The sale is a real big piece of the fair from a junior exhibitor’s point of view,” Kircher said. “It’s a chance for them to highlight their efforts.”
