As another school year looms for Portales Municipal Schools, students and teachers seem ready, and most Portales area schools hosted open house on Friday.
School starts Monday for grades 2-12.
“Today was open house and I got to meet a lot of my students and their parents,” Valencia fifth grade teacher Danna Smith said Friday. “It was a really good experience. I enjoyed visiting with them and it got me excited for the year.”
The Portales High School Student Council organized a mini-carnival in the school parking lot while teachers, parents and students took part in the school’s open house Friday afternoon, featuring a dunking booth, face painting and music.
“We had a really good show-up,” PHS credit recovery director Killeen Tapia said. “Since I’ve been here, I think this was the best (open house).”
“It was very successful,” drivers education teacher Glen Johnson said. “Lots of activity, lots of parents, lots of students, lots of involvement — the student council did a great job with the entertainment out here. It was a good kick-off to the school year.”
Smith has been in the classroom for 10 years, and teaches science, social studies and reading.
“We (at Valencia) didn’t have that kind of open house,” Smith said. “We have an open house where (the students) come in, we meet them, we share some expectations that we have. We try and keep it really light —
