Background: Berry worked as part of the maintenance personnel for three years at the children’s home while completing his schooling. He went on to teach fourth-grade for several years. Later, he became the youth pastor at First Baptist Church, eventually taking the role of Associate Pastor.
Time on the job: Five months
What does your job entail? I take care of all personnel files and training procedures. I also keep licenses up to date and make sure the children’s home is ready for inspections. I pretty much take care of all the legalities.
What is a typical day on the job like for you? The first thing I do in the morning is check my email for anything important. Later, my day consists of updating personnel files, doing background checks, including checking references, and dealing with whatever the day throws at me.
Why did you choose this job? I love kids. Ever since I left 12 years ago, both my wife and I have had the heart for the children’s home.
What type of training, if any, do you need for your job? One would need experience with kids, especially children in special situations. Administration and human relations skills help a lot as well.
What do you most enjoy about your job? I get to see the kids, some of them on a daily basis. I also enjoy seeing success in their faces when they have done something good. There are kids out there that need a place to stay.
