The Arts Academy at Bella Vista’s annual production of “The Nutcracker” is 7 p.m. on Friday.

The play has been produced annually for 12 years, according to director Viola Cano.

Cano is the dance teacher for Bella Vista, but she says the play is in no way a one-woman show.

“We couldn’t do this without our teachers and parents,” she said.

Parents, teachers and grandparents have helped make costumes and sets.

There are 240 students acting in the play, Cano said. She said the play will be the traditional Nutcracker, with all of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s music.

Cano said the students and teachers had help with choreography from Ballet Lubbock’s Yvonne Rocz. But Cano said what she likes about the play is that each of the teachers put their own person touch on the scene or dance they’re in charge of.

But for the children, Cano said the play is a confidence builder.

“Being involved in a huge production with a huge audience builds confidence in the kids,” she said. “They do things that are challenging for them and they’re successful in it. Then they know they can do it.”

Cano said seeing the 240 students and the teachers on stage at the end of the performance is the best part of the whole production.

“It’s like the period at the end of the sentence,” she said.
