Little Miss Merry Christmas

It’s time once again for the Little Miss Merry Christmas contest.

The girls serve as the grand marshals of the light parade on Dec. 12 and ride in the lead car.

The winner is chosen by penny votes, cast in jars at the sponsoring business. Contestants also can hold fundraisers, such as a bake sale, car wash or gift wrapping service, at the business to gain votes.

The girl who raises the most money earns the title of Little Miss Merry Christmas and is crowned at the courthouse square following the light parade.

Woody’s Jewelry provides the winner’s tiara, and each sponsor provides trinkets that go into gift bags for the contestants.

The money raised is used to purchase the white lights that decorate businesses in Portales during the holiday season.
