Free throws lift Hounds over Highlands

Freedom New Mexico

Junior guard Justin Reynolds hit two free throws with seven seconds left Saturday night to lift Eastern New Mexico University’s men to a 66-65 win over New Mexico Highlands at Greyhound Arena.

The victory was the second in a row for ENMU, and avenged a season-opening 81-74 loss to Highlands in Las Vegas, N.M.

Junior guard Dannon Wafer scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Greyhounds (2-3), who fell behind 8-0 at the start and never led by more than a point until midway through the second half.

Junior guard Kevin Franklin added 15 points and junior forward Equs Darby 10 for ENMU, which shot 65 percent from the field in the second half and 58 percent (26-for-45) for the game. That allowed the Hounds to overcome 24 turnovers.

Highlands (3-1) also had three players in double figures — Roman Arande with 18 points, Jerard Moret with 16 and Chris Dunn of Hobbs with 13.

The Cowboys held ENMU scoreless for nearly three minutes at the outset before guard Aaron King hit a jump shot. The Hounds took a brief 14-13 lead on two free throws by Wafer at the 10:37 mark, but Highlands went on a 10-0 run and eventually built a 10-point lead.

Jimmie Marshall’s 3-pointer started ENMU on a half-ending 13-3 run and the Hounds pulled even 29-29 at halftime on Darby’s layup with six seconds left.

A basket and two free throws by Wafer and a layup by Darby gave the Hounds their biggest lead at 45-40 with just over 13 minutes left, but Highlands regained a 48-47 advantage on Dunn’s layup with 10 minutes left.

Neither team led by more than three points the rest of the way, and after a 3-pointer by Andrade tied it with 5:37 to go the margin was never more than two.

Franklin’s 3-pointer gave ENMU a 60-58 advantage with 3:55 left, but Andrade’s two free throws put the Cowboys up 63-62 with 2:34 to go. Two free throws by King were offset by Dunn’s layup with 18 seconds left, setting the stage for Reynolds’ game-winning free throws.

Highlands threw the ball toward halfcourt after a timeout, but Marshall came away with a steal in a scramble and was able to dribble out the clock.
