• Shareen King and Patricia Correll’s Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement students headed to Roswell for the New Mexico MESA SE Regional Winter Design competitions Feb. 6. Team members Bailey Thompson-Garcia, Amy Carter, Bryan Gore, Isaac Brown, Josh Beres, Alex Gill, Rigo De la Torre, Alexandria Garrison, Tristan McKinley, Carlos Cano, Jason Tapia, Kylie Nations, Brendan Caywood, Kelsey Hall, Lacey Harless, Kyle Correll, Sarah Rice, Maranda Stone, and Raul Perez competed in six events. The robotics team, Bryan Gore, Isaac Brown, Josh Beres, and Alex Gill, placed second and will go to the MESA Day competition in Albuquerque.
• Band director Cindy Stone took her students to the Southeast New Mexico Music Educators’ Association Solo and Ensemble in Clovis. Her students earned favorable recognition for their talents.
Kaleigh Johns and Hanna Wagner tied for the most outstanding junior high soloist.
Sixteen students earned “Superior” rating: Mychael Sturm and Alex Herrera, trumpet duet; Marie-Renee Lops and Kaleigh Johns, woodwind duet; Kelsey Hall and Kylie Nations, flute duet; Bernice Salazar, flute solo; Mychael Sturm, trumpet solo; Hannah Wagner, flute solo; Adrianna Lucero, clarinet solo; Alex Herrera, trumpet solo; Kaleigh Johns, flute solo; Marie-Renee Lops, alto saxophone solo; Jerry Oden, trumpet solo; Isaac Brown, alto saxophone solo; Bailey Thompson-Garcia, French horn solo; and Brendan Caywood, trumpet solo.
Nine students earned “Excellent” ratings: Adriana Lucero and Jackie Tapia, clarinet duet; Alura Youngerwolf and Kelsea Toombs, woodwind duet; Tristan McKinley and Christian Smith, trombone duet; Jason Tapia and Christian Garcia; and LeAnn Vicuna, trumpet solo.
Nine students earned “Good” ratings: Nichole Lujan and LeAnn Vicuna, trumpet duet; Caleb Burciaga, Nathan Burciaga, Matthew Shelly, and Jason Tapia, brass quartet; Erica Strawn, alto saxophone solo; Nichole Lujan, trumpet solo; and Jared Morgan, tuba solo.
• From 7 p.m. until 11 p.m. on Feb. 20 a masquerade ball for will be held for Portales Junior High students. Admission of $4 includes a mask for everyone.
