Zia women’s soccer program adds seven players

Eastern New Mexico University has signed seven women’s soccer players to national letters of intent for the 2009 season. according to a release from the school.

The signees include freshmen forwards Brittany Bustos of Albuquerque
(St. Pius) and Brook Serrano of Los Lunas, midfielders Desiree
Dominguez of Alamogordo and Abigail Tarin of Albuquerque (St. Pius),
and defenders Alyssa Pleiner of Ennis, Texas; Samantha Smith of
Rowlett, Texas, and Ashley VerBerkmoes of Castle Rock, Colo. All are
incoming freshmen except for Pleiner, a transfer from Navarro College
in Texas who will be a junior.

“This is a talented group (which has) excelled on the soccer field, in the classroom and in their communities,” coach Ray Nause said. “We look forward to the ability, competitive spirit and desire they will bring to our program.”

Bustos was a five-year letterwinner at St. Pius and was twice
all-district, tallying 37 goals, including 14 as a senior. Serrano was
among the top Class 5A scorers in the state as a senior with 13 goals
and nine assists.

Dominguez lettered for five years at Alamo, garnering all-district
honors three times and helping the Lady Tigers to Class 5A state
tournament appearances in each of her five seasons. Tarin earned
honorable mention Class 4A all-state and second-team all-district as a

Pleiner helped Navarro post an 18-1-1 record in 2008 after earning
MVP honors for the team as a freshman. Pleiner was a part of two
district champions in high school, while VerBerkmoes was her team’s
captain for two years Douglas County High School in Castle Rock.

ENMU went 9-10 last fall, including 3-7 in the Lone Star Conference.
