Name: Sharon King
Job: Executive director of the Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce
Background: King grew up in Portales and graduated from Portales High School and Eastern New Mexico University. Her bachelor degree is in university studies. She retired from ENMU before working with the chamber.
Time on Job: Two years as executive director; 3 1/2 years total with the Chamber, starting as manager.
What does your job entail? The No. 1 thing would be planning events for the city to help bring outsiders into Portales. We also try to promote Portales in general through attractions and to offer our Chamber members learning experience.
What is a typical day like for you?: Totally unpredictable, which is part of what makes it so fun. We don’t have anything like a typical day.
Why did you choose this job?: It kind of chose me. A week before I retired, the (then) executive director called and offered me the manager position. I was planning to take a few months off, but this sounded like too much fun to let it go by. And I haven’t regretted that decision. I think it’s the best job in town.
What do you enjoy most about your job?: The variety of people I work with, from volunteers to my board to city and state officials, and the variety of tasks that I do. For example, in February, we had our annual banquet, so I dressed up and acted as MC one night. And the next day, I was in my jeans raking peanut hulls for Ag Expo.
