The Ruidoso Village Council has approved a contract to hire Portales City Manager Debi Lee, who said she will take the job.

The Ruidoso Village Council unanimously approved the contract Tuesday, said Barbara Fleming, deputy village manager. According to the contract, she said, Lee’s salary is $95,000 a year plus benefits, and Lee will determine the start date.

When contacted Tuesday evening, Lee said she hadn’t heard from the village council, but was expecting approval of the contract, which she had seen.

“I’ve never had such a good contract,” she said.

Lee hopes to stay in Portales through as much of June as possible for the city’s centennial celebration and to visit her sick father and take care of projects and personal business.

Portales has a good staff and is in sound financial shape, she said.

“I feel like I’m leaving this town in better shape than I found it,” Lee continued.

However, she said it would be hard to leave because she liked Portales and was attached to the city staff and officials.

“I’ve been on a rollercoaster about it,” Lee said.

Lee said the Ruidoso position is a good opportunity for her and her family, and a fun new challenge.

Ruidoso Mayor Ray Nunley was pleased to hire Lee.

“We’re thrilled to have Debi Lee working for us, and we feel we really did well by getting her,” he said.
