The Roosevelt County Little League all-star teams start play Monday in the New Mexico District 3 tournaments.
Sammy Villanueva returns for his sixth year coaching the 11-12 year-old Roosevelt All-Stars, who won the District 3 title last season.
Assistant Coach Clint Walker said the core of the 11-12 years olds have already been to state.
“Last year we nearly won state,” Walker said. “We won our first two games, then we lost our third. We battled back, won the first game, lost the second.”
The game in question was against Albuquerque Eastdale, and they beat Roosevelt County 1-0.
Walker said this team is focusing on getting through district in a district that includes two Clovis teams and another from Quay County.
Roosevelt County hosts Quay County on Field 1. Zia and American play in Clovis on Monday.
“It is a tough district,” Walker said. “We’ve got to go battle them, and we’re not going to sneak up on them. The teams know we are coming.”
The 10-11 year-olds start a three-games series with Clovis Zia on Monday.
The 9-10 year-olds start at Quay on Tuesday. If they win, Roosevelt County travels to Clovis to play the winner of Clovis American and Zia game.
