Portales News Tribune reported that if there was a grand champion of the Kiwanis pet show at the fair the night before, it had to be a cat that ran up a steel pole at the urging of a police dog as big as a polo pony. The cat was retrieved from its slippery perch, and the dog was properly reprimanded for discourtesy to a fellow animal, even though it was a despised species. The show’s 48 contestants ranged from white mice to greyhounds and from turtles to a stuffed bear.
