COMMERCE, Texas — Texas A&M-Commerce held off an Eastern New Mexico University rally in the first game and the Lions went on to a 26-24, 25-14, 25-16 Lone Star Conference volleyball victory over the Zias on Saturday.
Commerce (15-4, 3-1 LSC) opened an 11-2 lead in the first game with nine unanswered points, but the Zias surged into the lead 24-23 on consecutive kills by sophomore Karen McIntyre and freshman Madison Rhoades before claiming the final three points for a 1-0 lead.
ENMU (4-14, 0-4) led 8-5 in the second set, and then took a 13-11 lead on kills by Rhoades and McIntyre. But a kill by Morgan Moeller sparked a 14-1 blitz that nailed down the set for the Lions.
Regan Hayes’ kill put Commerce in front for good 5-4 in the third game. The Zias were within 11-8 after a kill by Megan Longoria, but the Lions answered with a 9-3 run and were able to close out the match.
Terra Ousley had eight kills for the Lions, while Naomi Mays added seven. Setter Perla Faudoa collected 26 assists and 12 digs.
Rhoades led the Zias with eight kills, followed by Jessica King and Veronica Valdez-Kent with seven apiece. Valdez-Kent had 12 digs, while Caitlin Murphy had 23 digs and McIntyre finished with 22 assists and six digs.
The Zias are idle until Oct. 6 when they step outside the conference to face Oklahoma Panhandle State at Goodwell, Okla.
