The Eastern New Mexico women’s soccer team pushed 22nd-ranked Midwestern State hard on Friday, but the Mustangs got a goal from junior midfielder Kendra Clemons early in the second half and held on for a 1-0 Lone Star Conference victory at the ENMU pitch.
The loss was the fourth in a row for the Zias (7-8, 2-4 LSC). Since a 4-1 win for the Mustangs (10-1-2, 4-1) in the team’s initial meeting, the last six have been decided by one goal.
ENMU’s lone win in the series came in 2006, a 1-0 victory at Wichita Falls, Texas.
Sophomore forward Lindsay Pritchard served the ball ahead to Clemons after a Zias turnover, and Clemons found the back of the net from about 30 yards out with a high kick over the head of ENMU goalkeeper Sierra Cardenas with nearly 10 minutes gone in the second half.
The Zias’ best chance to score came several minutes earlier when senior forward Samantha Lawrence took a cross pass, but her shot was stopped by Mustangs keeper Mallory Whitworth.
Whitworth, a freshman relieved senior Ashley Meek in goal at the start of the second half. They combined to give the Mustangs their ninth shutout of the season.
The Zias return to action on Friday with a 3:30 p.m. conference match at home against Abilene Christian.
