Helton signs in-state prospects

Freedom New Mexico

First-year Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball coach Andrew Helton signed two Albuquerque players, guards Kyle Lantz of Manzano and Michael Maya of Valley, to national letters of intent for the 2010-11 season.

Lantz helped Manzano to a 26-3 record last season, averaging 12 points per game and shooting 48 percent from 3-point range. Maya has started the last two years at Valley, averaging 23 points as a sophomore and 22.5 last season and helping the Vikings with at least 20 games both seasons.

“Kyle is a tremendous shooter with a great feel for the game,” said Helton, whose team opens the regular season at home on Tuesday against Western New Mexico. “We truly believe (Maya) is the top senior point guard in New Mexico. He brings the ability to shoot, dribble and pass.”
