The Portales Senior Center is having a special guest fly into town for children to visit Friday.
Santa Claus will be at the center to help collect toys for Operation Santa Cop and canned food for the food bank.
Senior Center Director Dawn Kryder said she suggested the “Winter Wonderland” idea to the seniors in September so they can start planning.
“We will have a trail that will run by little winter wonderland scenes for the children to look at,” Kryder said. “All the space in the main room of the senior center will look like it snowed. There’s going to be hills, winter scenes with stuffed animals and trees.”
The senior center has been collecting sheets to make the floor look like it is covered in snow, teddy bears and other items for the event.
Admission to the winter wonderland is a toy or can of food.
Pictures with Santa are from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
“We’ll donate the toys to the Santa Cop program out of the city,” Kryder said. “The seniors will be guiding the children through. It will be fun.”
Consigning Women, seniors and people at Portales City Hall have donated sheets for the center to use to decorate Winter Wonderland.
“I’m probably the only manager that goes to city hall to get sheets out of her box,” Kryder said. “We have a lot people involved because we need a lot of sheets. I think people will be surprised at what we are doing here.”
Mickey Zachry is one of the senior volunteers helping with the winter wonderland at the center. She donated a lot of the teddy bears that are going to used for the holiday display.
“We’ve been decorating trying to get ready for it,” Zachry said. “We have until Friday to get it finished. I’m going to be helping out Santa Claus when they go to take pictures of the children someone is going to have to guide them around.”
