PNT staff reports
Sheila’s Classy to Whimsy Ladies Apparel has been in Portales seven years. The store offers clothing, jewelry and other fashion needs.
Sheila Hays has lived in Portales all of her life .
“I know my customers and I get to visit with them,” Hays said. “That is the advantage of being in a small town.
“There was a need for it, there were mostly western stores here,” Hays said. “There wasn’t any shopping places for ladies.”
Hays said she enjoys helping her customers find something that fits them for any special occasion or no special reason at all.
“I sell a lot of the yellow box flip-flops,” Hays said. “I also do alterations. I have clothes altered to fit to fit my customers needs. I offer that and a lot of department stores don’t offer that.”
Hays usually takes some of her merchandise to rodeos and sets up a booth.
“People call like a gentleman from California who wanted one of my Christine Alexander Jackets for his wife,” Hays said. “He knew to call me because he had seen my things in Ruidoso.”
Hays said one advantage with owning a small retail store is being able to offer varieties larger retail stores don’t have in stock.
“People still talk about the special shops that used to be mom and pop stores,” Hays said. “I hope that is something that I get to carry on for a while. It is neat to interact with your customers.”
