My turn: Fire dance leaves writer snake bitten

Jared Tucker

I seriously thought performing arts was the most boring thing in the world, until I saw the YouTube video of a young Portales woman playing with fire and hoola hoops.

Come to find out, it wasn’t the first time she’s done it.

Angela King, better known as Snake, has been dancing with fire and neat-looking glow toys for the past three years.

In this particular video, Snake is performing in front of a crowd, to the song “Spell on You” by Marilyn Manson. I definitely didn’t care for the song, but watching her dance with a hoola hoop that contained five balls of fire was actually pretty exciting.

While watching each fireball come near her hair, you can’t help but think, “I hope someone is standing close by with a fire extinguisher.”

Several times during the performance, she twirls the flaming hoop around her neck, her hips, and jumps back-and-forth through it several times. She definitely gives an extreme edge to performing arts.

The irony of this is Snake’s inspiration for getting into firedancing — seeing other people do it on YouTube.
