Los Alamos KOs Curry County from LL losers bracket

Los Alamos pitcher Matt Frye doubled and pitched seven innings to knock Curry County out 13-1 from the losers bracket Sunday night at Bell Park in Clovis state junior Little League baseball tournament.

Tyler Romero scattered two hits in the game as Curry County failed to push more than one run across the plate after a 20 minute game delay when the lights went out.

Curry County Coach Josh Burrell said Los Alamos came out to hit the ball.

“We just weren’t getting calls going our way,” Burrell said about the some of umpires calls. “I couldn’t complain about the boys, they went out there and put the ball in play. Los Alamos just came out to play a lot more than we did.”

Curry was down 8-0 and started working to get back into the game in the bottom of the third. After a single, balk and wild pitch by Los Alamos pitcher it seemed like things were finally going Curry County to more runs on the board.

There was a 20 minute delay after the lights went out in the bottom of the fourth. Once things were underway Curry County singled. The next batter up grounded into a double play.

“We came out ready to play, but the game opened up with a bad call at first,” Burrell said about the call that took them out of their rhythm.

Curry had three innings to work on getting back into the game, but that was overshadowed by runners being caught stealing or a near collision at second that ruled two Curry County base runners out.

Los Alamos Coach Jeff Fredenburg said he thought his team played well to keep from being eliminated.

“I thought they played to the best of their ability,” Fredenburg said. “Curry County fought and kept fighting even though they were down. Even though it was a lop sided game, they never gave up.”

Los Alamos plays Carlsbad at 7 p.m. in Portales at Rams Field, while Taos awaits the winner of the Albuquerque Paradise Hills/Silver City game on Monday at 7 p.m. at either Harris Field or Bell Park.
