Stargazer to be improved

The Portales MainStreet program is planning to improve the Stargazer, its open-air venue on Main Street.

The Stargazer opened last year for a couple of functions, but the roof and front wall caved in, said MainStreet board officer Greg Erf.

Since then, the group has cleared the debris and put up a wooden fence in place of the wall. Erf said the roof was removed, and the building has been shored up and inspected and is safe.

The Stargazer can be rented for events, and MainStreet is planning to install Americans with Disabilities Act restrooms, he said. The restrooms would cost $10,000, but Erf said the project is high on MainStreet’s list of priorities.
