Clovis native Hank Baskett will be out of the NFL for less than 24 hours.
Baskett, who was released Tuesday by the Philadelphia Eagles, will sign today with the Minnesota Vikings, according to his agent.
Jim Ivler said Tuesday night Baskett will sign a one-year deal.
“He’s very excited. He’s spoke with Coach (Brad) Childress and is excited about the opportunity to play wide receiver.”
Ivler said the Vikings called shortly after Baskett was released.
Minnesota, coming off a 12-4 season and an appearance in the NFC championship game, has struggled on offense during their 0-2 start with receiver Sidney Rice recovering from preseason hip surgery.
Baskett signed with the Vikings as a free agent after going undrafted in 2006, but never wore Viking purple. He was traded to the Eagles for receiver Billy McMullen before training camp.
Philadelphia parted ways with the 2001 Clovis High graduate to add undrafted rookie running back Joique Bell to the active 53-man roster.
Baskett’s play with the Eagles this season was limited to special teams.
“There’s no animosity toward the Eagles,” Ivler said. “Everybody has to make tough roster decisions and this came down to a tough roster decision.”
Baskett played three full seasons with the Eagles, and received a $1.545 million tender offer for his fourth season as a restricted free agent. But he was let go after the 2009 season opener to make room for quarterback Michael Vick.
He joined the Indianapolis Colts two days later, and played mostly special teams duty for the AFC champions. He gained national exposure for fumbling an onside kick recovered by the New Orleans Saints to open the second half of Super Bowl XLIV. The Saints won the game 31-17.
After the Colts did not offer Baskett a contract, he re-signed with the Eagles in the offseason. Baskett was active for both of the first two games with Philadelphia but did not record a catch. He has caught 78 passes for 1,080 yards in his career.
Baskett is also married to former Playboy model Kendra Wilkinson. The couple have a son, Hank Baskett IV, born last December.
