Angelo State’s Brandie DeBacker scored her seventh goal of the season early in the second half and the Rambelles went on to a 2-0 Lone Star Conference women’s soccer victory over Eastern New Mexico University on Sunday at the ENMU pitch.
DeBacker took a cross pass from Hanna Horeis from the right side of the goal and beat ENMU goalkeeper Sierra Cardenas at the 60:41 mark to snap a scoreless tie. Katelyn West added an insurance goal with just over 10 minutes remaining on a shot from outside the box which deflected off a diving effort by Cardenas and into the net.
ENMU (3-11, 0-7 LSC) controlled the first half, outshooting ASU (8-4-1, 5-1-0) by a 6-1 margin and collecting three corner kicks to one for the Rambelles. Angelo turned that around in the second half, with an 11-6 margin in total shots and a 3-0 edge in corners.
ENMU is back in action on Friday with a 3 p.m. LSC home matchup against East Central.
St. Mary’s 2, ENMU 1 (men) — St. Mary’s rallied for two second-half goals and defeated ENMU 2-1 in non-conference men’s soccer on Sunday at the ENMU pitch.
Senior forward Emerson Rodrigues, who had missed the Greyhounds’ previous three matches with an ankle injury, put ENMU (8-4-2) in front with about 15 minutes gone when he beat St. Mary’s goalkeeper David Schmelzer for his ninth goal of the season.
The tally came off a corner kick by senior Edgar Bear, which deflected off Hounds sophomore Michael Stewart. Bear’s assist was the 13th of his career and pushed him past Keith Vargas for the top spot in that category in the program’s history.
The Rattlers (3-8-0), who lost 1-0 at West Texas A&M on Friday, got a goal from David Anthony Oliver from about three meters outside the box midway through the second half, and another from Adam Muro on a free kick with about 14 1/2 minutes to go. It was the first goal of the season for both players.
ENMU, which has gone 1-3-2 since earning a No. 17 ranking in NCAA Division II in late September, returns to Lone Star Conference play with a 6 p.m. (MDT) match against rival West Texas A&M on Wednesday at Canyon, Texas.
